Wow, thanks Bruno!

I started this thread a few weeks ago and ended my post with: "I'd hope that the bolters will acknowledge their mistake and remove the bolts (and disguise the holes) from the established routes. This doesn't need to blow up into a bunch of name calling and sport-vs-trad. Just recognize that you made a mistake, and go fix it."

This is precisely what you've done, and I thank you for it.

It takes a lot of courage to publically admit my mistake and I hope the climbing community will appreciate my admission. I am just a human being; please forgive me.

I can't speak for everyone, I but respect you for stepping forward and taking responsibility for the bolts. It does take a lot of courage. I also appreciate the efforts you have made to correct the situation.

Mistakes will always happen. How a person deals with their mistakes will always say more about them than the fact that they made a mistake in the first place.

I hope your "alleged co-developer" (I love this term by the way!) comes to his senses and follows your lead.

I'm sorry about your hand injury. Mine's a bit of a mess these days as well. I hope your surgery goes well. Don't risk the health of your hand just to get those bolts out. I'd be happy to help Leo, and I'm sure others would as well. The point here was not to make you go take them out, but to get everyone in agreement that they should come out. Without that, we just have another stupid bolt war.

Thanks again,

-Rich

Nice effort Bruno, I met you the other night @ the Sun. We had a great conversation about sport climbing, and the equipping of sport routes. Its a finicky role the FA party has. Make it super safe, or tr the hell out of stuff, and run it out like almost a head-point. Either way its a personnel decision. Your act of going out to Cascade Crag and dealing with some of the bolt placements is applauded. Its great to see a community forum have something happen in a positive way. And good luck on the hand surgery, next beer is on me.

Nice way to work it out. Thanks Bruno. I think patience is expected and should be totally granted, as medical situations are priority and totally beyond your control.

I'm not sure about this, but isn't removal of vegetation illegal in Colorado? Doesn't matter, that much destruction of mother nature for our own pleasure is just obscene.

Answers to your question are buried in Araphoe and Roosevelt National Forest websites. Specific to the Boulder Ranger District:

" It is prohibited to damage natural features or remove rock, moss, lichens or other vegetation to improve climbing opportunities. " http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/arnf/recreation/rock-climbing/brd/in>>>>>

A related general regulation for the two forests:
"Do not carve, chop, cut or damage any live trees." http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/arnf/passes/rules.shtml

"Rock climbing opportunities can be found on the forest. As the popularity of this sport increases, it is becoming more important that everyone help prevent resource damage. Removable hardware and temporary anchors are preferred..."
http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/arnf/recreation/2009visitorguide.pdf

No doubt Cascade Crag ownership was researched prior to development.
Perhaps it isn't within National Forest boundaries.

Hats off to you Bruno for working to make things right.

see you all in february...

i love it. dozens of people bitching, moaning, arguing, trashing each other, taking stands they so obviously "firmly believe in". then when some one TRULY stands up... and makes it right... 5 responses.

you can tell how many people truly care vs how many people can't wait to get home from work and boring forum posting to some real, quality fox drama specials.

it's a good thing the opinions of the rock climbing community at large aren't represented by the "wankers" plaguing forums that would for the most part be empty otherwise.

bruno, i am impressed not only by your actions, but also by your willingness to engage the numerous whiners here for the sake of the few that legitimately care.

heal quickly, send hard.

Hangin' around before phase 2

I think, Bruno, you have gone above and beyond. For you to fix and help fix this crag, taking time away from climbing that I am sure you would rather be doing is amazing. Not many other people would make weekend plans to fix something that they did cause let alone what someone else did.

Props to you for admitting that you were wrong, on a forum that seems out to "beat up" anyone it doesn't agree with.

(An aside)Love the fact that as I am sitting here writing this the number one guideline on the page is "don't be a jerk," maybe this needs clarifying for some people because there was a lot of snide, full of self, and some just down right mean comments without all the info. And just so that I am clear, there were also thoughtful opinionated arguments which is different than being a jerk.

Again thank-you Bruno for your time, effort, and your obvious care that you took to do the right thing.
