BETA PHOTO: the splitter offwidth on the Tarryall Tower
Description
Tarryall Tower is one of the more scenic, discrete, and technical summits of the Pikes Peak Granite. The wilderness approach guards some of the best crack climbs I've ever seen in the Platte. Rumor is that Jim Dunn climbed the amazing offwidth crack. Strappo Hughes and company did all the big lines to the left. The first ascent of the tower was reported in Trail and Timberline, #593. Bob Witters, the climber who led the FA, is my neighbor. So, I wanted to get his 1967 route on Mountain Project.
Getting There
Take the long dirt road in to Lost Park trailhead. It starts off US Highway 285, just north of Jefferson. You can see the dirt road from the highway while descending from Kenosha Pass. From the trailhead hike down Lost Creek about four miles. The Tower overlooks the confluence of McCurdy Creek and Lost Creek.
Most of the hike is very nice, easy, trail. However, at the point where the Tarryall Tower becomes visible, the drainage becomes very steep and the officail trail ends. Traversing the hillside to the tower is very brushy side-hilling. Dropping down the creek, unitil directly under the tower, and then heading up to the rock is another way I've used. Both are brushy.
