DescriptionThis is a town of ~2500 which sits approximately 12 miles east of Grand Junction (on the western slope) along the I-70 corridor. This area may be best known for its excellent climate and soil for growing Colorado grapes for the Colorado wineries. Winters here are mild; however, summers can be enervating. Getting ThereMost folks will drive here via I-70. The town can be accessed via Exit 42 (or 44). Mt Garfield (~5500') is located WNW of Palisade, just north of the interstate. G.70 road which accesses the Mt. Garfield trailhead can be accessed via exit 42 and going south and then west. HospitalThe closest hospital, St. Mary's, is in Grand Junction if the tower should crumble prematurely. QuestionSo, is there any decent climbing higher up on Mt. Garfield? If you want a thrill, this is it. The smallest tower anywhere. One follows nail heads for about 65' up the edge of a steep ridge to the base of the 15' "skinny" tower. A couple of aid moves to reach the summit block (3'X 18"). On the first ascent as Ross stood up on the summit, the whole spire started to sway from its base....
