A pic of the South Boulder.

Description

A great alpine bouldering block on the east side of Independence Pass. There are no routes on this block harder than V3 but it is a worthy stop maybe to get warmed up for the other side of the pass. I've never run into anyone else bouldering here so there is some seclusion value. This block is called "Katie's Block" in Horan's book, but I have a feeling this is made up. If anyone has any real historical info, please let me know and I will update.

Getting There

Heading from the Aspen side of IP once you go over the pass there is a dirt road off to your left just after the 3rd and final hairpin turn. Turn left and head down the dirt road maybe 50 yards to a green fence and trailhead. If you are coming from Twin Lake this is the first hairpin turn before you start heading up the pass. Hike in about 100 yards and this block is located on your left thru a bit of scrub brush.
