Description

Hike a short way up the cliff side until at the major pine tree that leans into the rock. Right behind this is a nice little 5.12 start to good 5.11 edge climbing on greyish granite. Tricky moves right off the deck give the line its 12 rating, otherwise things are reasonably moderate. Good continuity, good pro, and ususally open. The pine tree kills most of the sun to be had further uphill. This is a recommended route and one that I usually jump on each time I go to Monitor.

This was a fun sport route, and sustained 5.11a/b/c though the opening moves off the deck were probably 11c/d. Being that "Glory Hole" is rated the same (5.12), I'd give this route an 11d, as it was considerably easier - Glory is probably 12a as far as I'm concerned. This is a fun, well-protected line that shouldn't be missed (and if you're like me, don't let the 12 rating make you think twice). I understand (from some locals who were putting up a few more lines) that a new guide will include the Monitor Rock, and should be going to print sometime next year.
