BETA PHOTO: The Hanging Lake Trail Boulder in Glenwood Canyon.
Description
Easy and quick access combined with a quiet, tranquil setting and quality stone make this a nice place to get some quick climbing in. The boulder is granite and the landings are all flat minus some small rocks at the base. There are short problems and some tall highball problems to do. There are a few cracks on top so it would be possible to set up a toprope as well for some of the taller stuff.
The new Rifle/Western Slope guidebook describes problems in the V1 and V2 range but there is harder stuff to do/create.
Getting There
Drive to the Hanging Lake exit (#125) on I-70, east of Glenwood Springs. Park at the trailhead parking lot and walk east on the bike path towards the Hanging Lake Trail. Walk for about 5 minutes before coming to the lone boulder that is encircled by a sidewalk.
This spot is quickly becoming a favorite because it's 15 minutes from my house, a 5 minute walk and I can get outside with my new daughter. I think others will also appreciate it, particularly if you too need a spot for a quick hit of climbing.
