Simon Edwards whacking a bit of ice on 2/14/04.

Description

This is a really fun route tucked just downstream from the lower bridge in the Ouray Ice Park. It can be combined with mixed routes up the overhanging wall below the ramp or climbed for its own sake. It can be a very photogenic from above.

Wander up short curtains & pillars to the pillar below the ramp. Move up the pillar. The crux move may be moving off the pillar on to the slab ramp. You can sidepull the ice on the edge of the ramp. Hook happily or swing gingerly in balance across the slab. The rock is not far below the ice. Kinda feels like climbing 5.8 granite slab. Neat. 100ft.

This route has even been climbed by a 7 1/2 month pregnant lady!

Protection

Screws, including at least 2 stubbies.

Toprope Protection

Slings off the telephone pole +/- large metal anchors, 2-3 stubbies (down the ramp) can reduce the clucking factor.

Some screws put in on the way down will definitely keep down the pucker facter of a HUGE swing down low if you fall. Fun route regardless. Crossing the slab was the highlight, under the peering eyes of the crowd at the Ice Festival.
