Description

The Umbrella Tree is a nice afterwork or winter climb. Easy access to the summit for anchors make this a great top rope. There are some good 5.10s and a 5.8 on the left side that ascends a gully. It's really like a tough face climb that in the middle has a large ledge that turns into a very fun boulder problem. In the summer, the rock is just too hot to climb in the afternoon. But, in the fall and winter the rock is superb for climbing. It's on Flagstaff so expect great friction.

Getting There

To get to the Umbrella Tree (aka little flatiron) park at the Crown Rock parking lot. Walk down hill past the monkey traverse and in about 200 yards you will see the base of the climb. You can ascend the gully to between it and another face with a fun crack on it. Boulder up the back side, and use the tree and some nuts and cams for TR anchors.

Nice toprope especially if you're going with people who haven't climbed much. Good gear placement for the anchor up by the tree, and the climb is fun and harder than it looks (in a good way!) Worth a couple of hours and very good climb for the effort of getting to it, which is minimal. Also is in the shade in the morning in the summer.

This is a really great place to take people who have never climbed before, but it is harder than it looks. Still a really fun toprope. If you are going to use the tree at the top as an anchor, bring some padding because continuous use as an anchor has left the bark in bad shape.
