Description

The Second Buttress has several good climbs: Tough Situation (9+) and Classic Finger Crack (9) are somewhat popular. Pine Tree Route (5) is a great beginner's lead.

L->R

A. Elephantiasis, 10 X, 2p, 130', gear.
B. Tough Situation, 9+, 1p, 60', gear.
C. Avalon Rising, 12, 1p, bolts & gear or TR.
D. Classic Finger Crack, 9, 1p, 60', gear.
E. Pine Tree Route, 4, 1p, 100', gear.

Getting There

Take the climber's access trail to the water pipe, and walk right, past the First Buttress, to the base of the Second Buttress.

You can access Tough Situation and Classic Finger Crack from the water pipe by scrambling up a gully to a platform below the summit block. Or you can hike up to the top by taking a path just left of the First Buttress. Then head right and scramble down between the First and Second Buttress, and do a 3rd-class traverse over to the start of these routes; see photo.

Pine Tree Route begins just above the water pipe, just left of the gully between the Second and Third Buttress.

The fastest descent from the top is a rappel from the tree atop Pine Tree Route. The easiest walk-off is down a trail just left of the First Buttress.

The Elephant Buttresses. Most routes start off the water pipe; Tough Situation and Classic Finger Crack can be accessed by scrambling down from the top.

The easiest walk-off is between the First Buttress and the Dome. You can also rappel from the top of Pine Tree route. Descent via the water tunnel between the Third and Fourth Buttress is sometimes possible.

Watch out for poison ivy!
