Maybe the South Platte is one area where a bit of local help would be appreciated...

See this comment re Bucksnort Slab...

My climbing partner and I were just discussing how needed this is. See you on Friday!

Didn't know there was much rock climbing in Denver???
Kind of like having a presence in Kansas.
Is there a larger number of concerned climber types in Boulder/Golden area (seems like outdoorsy-loving folks would tend to live near the outdoorsies, and city folk live in the cities? no?).
Seems like more people would show if they didn't have to go into the armpit of America (Denver).

Good luck on that one, getting people into Denver to talk about climbing access.

Paz, I hear where you're coming from. The problem policy is with lands that are outside of a "city" where Dvr Mtn Parks has their land inventory in the mountains and does have technical rock.

It's complex to try and work on access with the city; let's meet about it and see what the AF has in mind. Unfortunately, the last attempt to try and do something really met with apathy on all sides. I don't see much policy changing with a main focus on the upcoming convention; but if someone at the AF has better ideas, I say we at least hear about it.

Paz -

Denver Water Board owns Gross Reservoir - Damnation (CLOSED). Also, there is climbable rock in several of the Denver Mountain Parks, which I'm not going to name here.

But put that aside for moment. Doesn't "Metro Denver" cover at least 6 - if not 8 - counties. Your response was very childish. If you don't want to get involved, don't try to derail the pro-climbing efforts of others.

I live in Boulder County. I understand the apathy and malaise about access issues that exists here in Boulder, mostly because Boulder has policy-makers that climb or once did and, therefore, reasonable policies. That is not true everywhere else.

If you can't be a part of the solution, don't become part of the problem.

For the record -- only Georgia can rightfully claim that title.

More info:

The Access Fund is currently organizing a public climbers' meeting to facilitate the formation of a Denver area climbing organization. This local climbing organization, or Affiliate, will be a conservation and stewardship liaison with Denver Mountain Parks, NFS, and BLM; a local version of the Access Fund. It will be a grassroots organization run by local climbers concerned with improving climbing access in the Denver Metro and Front Range Areas.

All climbers are welcome.

Hey Paz

Gary, Indiana called and is upset because "armpit of the country" is legally there city motto.

I guess I should put on some ecofriendly, Boulder deodorant since I live right smack in the middle of the pit of the arm.

Nice One!

Hey all, I don't think I can make it tonight unfortunately, but I am super interested in being involved and helping out, so if someone could keep me updated it would be much appreciated.

I am all over the state right now, but this past spring I was up in Fort Collins and became a pseudo-member of the Northern Colorado Climber's Coalition (NC3). Already they have done an amazing job and if we can muster up even a fraction of the enthusiasm they have, the Denver group will be bomber.

If someone could post a summary, or some place to obtain follow-on activity information it would be appreciated. I won't be able to make it tonight, but have historical information on past access related efforts for some of the areas of interest.

Also, I would say that Boulder has climber friendly policies. They close large portions of the Flatirons every year and have attempted to permanently close high quality crags such as Mickey Mouse and the Sacred Cliffs.

I would like to second Leah and Tod's request and be kept in the loop about the meeting. I had really hoped to attend the meeting but unfortunately I did not get back into town until after it. I'd like to be involved if possible, and can be reached via this site. Thanks.

Ditto, my work schedule didn't jive with the time. Please pass along any info, and if future meetings are planned post 'em up.

Initial meet was small & mostly going over organizational setup.

I think some of us felt the best way to do this is to have something that would be enthusiastic & hands-on; like get-together(s). I think we've got something slated for later in July, like a social but a little more than a beer night.

If all we do is get together and pound on policy issues, doing this coalition just won't be enjoyable. Not that it's not important, but having mtgs & attacking policy just hasn't been very effective; rather more antagonistic.

There are tons of issues that affect access & conservation around the front range and a large & diverse hiker/climber group involved; which is probably gonna be like herding cats.

So, I guess we'll have one of the participants get an e-mail list going & announce something of a planned social -- it'll probably be in Dvr, late July.

For those of you who would like to be kept on the loop . . . send Lyle an e-mail at denverclimbers@yahoo.com. We will add you to the list and send out information about future meetings and activities to you! Keep watching for information on our July meeting!
