The old Forrest Mountaineering Foxhead nuts were made of plastic and they worked just fine. I bet those poly hexes are nice and quiet on your rack.

One thing to consider about slung hexes vs wired is that the slung ones (which I like) Don't have to have a runner wasted on them to keep them from being josseled out. If your line is fairly straight just clip a single biner to the sling. As for placing above your head your only loosing a couple inches and I prefer to place gear like hexes where I have a better view of how it sits in the crack ie no higher than eye level anyhow.

Well, it depends how long you've tied your cord. I have a couple hexen with 12-18" slings on them. Yes, I don't need to put a runner on them, but they whack me in the shins when on my rack. Doubling them up helps, but I worry about sheath wear what with all the pulling the cord back and forth through the hex.
