Hey Guys,
Serious question, looking for serious input. What is the feeling on cutting the old slings on my cams off and replacing with a double loop of some 6 to 8 mm acc. cord, tied with a double/triple fishermans?

I am aware BD will re sling my cams for 5 bucks a piece, (plus five for re-shipping them to me and the cost of shipping them to BD in the fist place added on.)

On a few of my cams I have left the old nylon and added a loop of 5mm tech cord as a "just in case" but I guess it depends on how worn the old nylon is in the first place.

you could probably just girth hitch a sling on there as well. that was my plan for some old cams i inherited. now my plan is to just buy new ones.

girth hitches significantly reduce the strength of the sling, They also go through a fair bit of cyclic loading in the same part of the sling, so the sling should be monitored for wear and changed or rotated.

Get some new ones sewn on there, you can't beat full strength sewn runners, get a nice fat bar tack sewn in there and it is just piece of mind.

It's true that breaking strength is reduced, but the knotted slings are still likely stronger than the cam itself.

I've reslung some worn cams with 6mm cordalette. I use a piece that will be double runner length and double thread it up on the cam so you can unclip and use it as an extendo sling. I hope that makes sense. I tie the sling with double fishermen.

Also, you could do the above and tie an overhand and make the sling redundant but not extendanble.

Or, you could send out to yates or other companies to sew on a runner. I think yates will sew an extendo on there, which is super convenient IMHO because you don't always have to use a draw and there is no knot to get in the way.

Many options.

Noah's first rope...kinda.

BTW BD only charges $5.00 for shipping all of your cams, up to a point.

Tied slings are old school but they do make your cams bulkier when slung on your gear loops.

Yes, this is perfectly safe if you absolutely can't or don't want to have them professionally redone. I used to do this (I used webbing) with old school Camalots and to sling cams before the days when they came with sewn slings. Fell on them, aided on them, no problem. BUT, as others have pointed out, home ties are generally heavier and bulkier, and you have to keep an eye on the knots to be sure they don't get dangerously short tails, fray, etc.

You mention accessory cord, though, not webbing. Be sure to check your tensile strengths and size it right for the application. You might consider using spectra cord. I have all my old hexes slung this way with a triple fishermans.

Me!

Not So Famous Old Dude -

Where did you get the 5.5mm spectra to re-sling your hexes? I have some hexes I'd like to re-sling but I can't find 5.5mm spectra anywhere and I can't seem to get the thicker stuff to work.

Sorry - Not trying to hijack the thread.

Sorry, but I bought that stuff back in 1990. I haven't bought 5.5mm spectra since then. It was Bluewater that made it. You may have to order it now. I just pulled this up quickly on Amazon. You can still get it in 5.5mm evidently.

How I Send

In my opinion, it would definitely be worth it to have BD redo the slings - with the original correct colors - so that you don't have to relearn that your #2 is now on neon green super tape...And the work is guaranteed by black diamond...the cost of peace of mind.

You can order 5.5 Bluewater Spectra cord from http://www.mountaingear.com/ I've gotten some from them recently so they do stock it.
