| OK,
I have decided that nalgenes are radioactive, but that it is wise to replace my daily drinker with something else.
The question is, will nalgene issue a recall? I've used nalgenes as my main water vessel(I don't like camelbacks etc) and I own about a dozen. I'm wondering if there are plans to replace the BPA bottles for free.
Any news? Evan | |

| I went to: http://www.nalgene-outdoor.com/
and looked at the information regarding their phase out of BPA plastics. I don't see anything about offering a refund although they do offer us a site to help us decide which products to use.

Of course all of their old fashionned HDPE bottles are already 100% BPA free. So, if you've got any of the old-school milky-white type SOFT nalgenes, you are already good to go.

| I spoke to the Nalgene guys at the last OR show. Regardless of the test results, no plans of mfg refund was in the works even though individual stores such as MEC have recalled bottles
I also heard the original milk-whites have always been safe

Oh, and if you're looking to replace your daily drinker with a container proven to have zero release issues, might i suggest glass? These make handy containers, and when they're empty you can go to the store and get another one filled at the factory:

| Consideration: I replaced my Nalgene (when I managed to lose it) w/ a Sigg 1L metal bottle; I'm the sort who climbs with a bottle clipped to the back of my harness. After just a couple of months and < 10 outings (too much work :( ), it's rather significantly beat up just from approach scrambles, sitting on ledges, and maybe one or two chimney moves. So I'll either need to change my ways or rig up a protective sock w/ neoprene; otherwise I suspect I'll have knocked a hole in it within a year or two. I'm also sure that falls a Nalgene might survive will kill it.
Also, and this is uninformed out-my-ass opinion: the best kind on the internet, it seems that BPA is most injurious for the very young and the not-yet-born as it interferes with development; if you're not going to find yourself pregnant I imagine you would have comparable health impacts/risks merely by breathing our nice fresh Front Range air.
(All that said, I'm not going back. It's got a nice musical clink to it!)

| Ends it? They basically say they don't have enough information to act, but base their decision on a "large body" of evidence.

Don't know if it's new to you all or not. http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/bpa.html I'm not a conspiracy theorist, so for me, this ends the madness. I'm keeping my hard nalgene bottles and moving onto the next crisis. ...and you believe the FDA (and your boss)..???
Quick, send me all you money and it will give you good luck..!!

BZZZZZZZZZT, sorry, denied. I already anticipated this by saying "I'm not a conspiracy theorist."
Good try though. :) | |

| I heart metal bottles, but I don't heart Sigg prices. Coleman has a metal bottle that holds ~1 liter for about half the cost ($5.99). It's aluminum with an epoxy liner. Here | |

Will 'send-it' next time :)
perhaps with all of this question/talk/doubt etc... we should resort back to the original 'canteen' ~heh-heh~

| I for one would like to support the idea of using glass containers. They are BPA free, recyclable, and usually come with fluids. When Sigg will sell me a metal bottle full of Cap'n Jack, I'll spend that much $$ on a metal water bottle.
Until then, I'll use the old-fashionned HDPE water bottles when I'm in the woods and glass in the camp site.
Sure hope my glass is all lead free . . . . . some of the tequila I bought in Mexico didn't cost me much . . . . . . .

| Hmm...epoxy liner? No thanks. There are several SIGG look alikes including some stainless steel bottles that are more dent resistant and cheaper. My last SIGG took a ton of abuse until I left it in the car, full on a cold winter night....nothing like the power of water to destroy a $20.00 bottle.
As for the "FDA saying BPA is OK..." They are the main reason it was not taken off the market 20 years ago when the first test results came out about the hazards of BPA.
It makes boy mice like girl mice, it causes cancer in mice, but hey it is fine for us to drink out of. Let's continue to make baby bottles out of it, after all it cleans really well and that is what parents care most about. Trust the government....Spend all your tax rebates....keep the TV turned on....You are not autonomous....Let us think for you....

| actually the SIGG bottles are lined with BPA that is why they are being taken to court right now. so check out http://www.bottlewraps.com for pure BPA free bottles. | |

Hey Angela, By chance do you work for or have reason to promote "bottle-wraps"..? I would expect a link instead on the 2nd post sending me to a 'SIGG being taken to court' reference, thanks :)
Kevin what are you referring to as being lined with epoxy..?
By Kevin Stricker From Evergreen, CO Apr 30, 2008
| The Coleman bottles.
Also if you will do a search for SIGG BPA you will get a ton of hits on how their liner is BPA free, so I would love to hear something to the contrary.
Also looks like the SIGG liner is an epoxy based substance so maybe the Colemann bottles are OK or maybe we are all going to die...guess that is a guarantee.

| When is someone going to come out with a durable light-weight bottle that has some sort of micro-thin glass lining? Seems that would put an end to all of the toxicity issues. | |
By Allen Hill From Glenelk, Colorado Apr 30, 2008
| The Sigg's are good to go. Plus they last forever. You can dent it, you can drop from hundreds of feet, but you can't kill one and I doubt it will kill you. I have a 35 year old bottle that was my father's! He often kept whiskey in it and to this day it smells good as new. Siggs rock! Plus you can fill them with fuel and plug them in to a MSR. Drinking out of that one though might hurt but i suspect you'd survive. Anyhow it's hard for me to believe that old Siggs even have a lining. Why? They where multi use bottles. Red ones for fuel and the silver ones for water. Oh shit maybe it was the other way around..... | |

Wouldn't you then be drinking little shards of glass particles after a drop or bang?
I think someone should start manufacturing water bottles out of fused quartz.... probably only $1k or so per bottle, such a deal!
