Problem solved....

If you want to save money take two old ropes cut them in half then use colored duct tape to hold two of the different halves together!

so there's something more than an ink mark letting a belayer know where end is. ;)

c'boy- on a multi-pitch climb, my partner is tied into the rope, so having a mark is a nice touch so they know when the end is approaching. while knotting the end is a great idea when rapping, be careful, as the knots can get stuck in cracks et cetera and be their own hassle. remember to untie the knots when pulling your line, and be careful out there. and shawn- while i'll agree that woolite would probably be the best washing choice, i'd probably pass on bleach of any kind- regardless of how pretty you want the end result.

Good points indeed. In the case of multi-pitch, having the belayer tied into the end of the rope "is the safety knot", as most belayers won't fit through an ATC...especially since there is a knot keeping them tied in. :D

Very good points to keep in mind; my "stopper knot vs. rope mark" suggestion was more geared toward rappelling, and/or belaying while lead climbing -->with the rope stacked at your feet...

If you tape the center with athletic tape while hanging on it (so the rope is stretched under tension) the tape stays better and passes through your device smoother.

Call me a girlie-girl, but I used black washable mascara, and it works better than anything else I've tried-tape-washable marker-etc.

Marking anything other than the middle can confuse either one of you when it comes time to rappel. You may inadvertently set up the rappel wrong and rap off the short end. This just recently happened apparently.

Pasted from BHCC newsletter:

I am sorry to be starting the first summer newsletter with tragic news.

Long-time Black Hills Needles climber Paul Duvall died June 24 from a rappelling accident at Moonlight Ridge in Custer State Park. Initial reports say Paul had climbed a route with a new acquaintance, using another party’s rope, which had half and quarter-rope length markings. Through a miscommunication, they mistook the quarter mark for the half mark, and did not have both ends of the rope on the ground when Paul began rappelling. He rappelled off the end of the rope, fell about 30 feet, and died moments after hitting the ground.

Paul was a firecracker. He was generous, funny and quick to laugh with his friends, and sometimes controversial with those whom he disagreed over Black Hills climbing ethics. Paul had strong opinions, which came from his deep love of Black Hills climbing. Over the years Paul had done numerous first ascents throughout the Needles, and more recently was a key player in developing the Moonlight ridge area up the hill from the Needles Eye. Paul spent many winters living and climbing in El Portero Chico, Mexico. Paul often brought used gear to Mexico to give to young climbers in that area, helping to develop the local Mexican climbing community. Paul was still climbing strong at age 71.
We will send out another email, including memorial info, when available.

You could really fuck with your unsuspecting belayer, put random marks on your rope and watch them try to figure it out...
For the record, I've been a sharpiemarker for many years, still here!
