A while ago, I was sittin at home, bored out of my mind (much like now), I came up with this idea for re-slinging a cam with just a standard sewn shoulder length runner. Mostly intended as a quick-fix and temporary solution if you have no spare webbing and dont want to cut up a sling:

an unslung hero.

resling1

thread the eye of the needle
resling2

keep the bartacks close to the eye.
resling3

overhand knot
resling4

kind of is stupidly simple, but maybe someone might also find it useful.

my dog decided one day that the sling of my numero uno cam would be a good chew toy. I like the fix.

Interesting. I think I'd be inclined to leave out the knot, which would give you a placement extended enough not to need another runner in a lot of cases. The disadvantage, of course, is that without the knot, it would hang really long on your rack.

You guys have it all wrong. A ratty old shoestring has to be the most dirtbag way to re-sling cams.

again, if you are on a wall, or climbing trip without bulk webbing, this is just a simple fix to be able to still use the piece. If i had bulk webbing at the time, i would not have posted my idea. Most of us may have a random sling hanging around, but not always webbing.

also, the reason to put the overhand knot, is not only to shorten, but to ensure that if "for some reason" you clip into one of the loops, you are still connected.

I do appreciate the critical feedback, however, and was the reason for me to share in the first place.

I've got a couple I reslung with a triple dogvine knot of spectra. I wouldn't want to do this on my TCU's, or C4's, but for my HB and last generation #2 camalot the thumb loop has a decent curvature it looks plenty OK.

Some day I need to wander downtown to climb max and get all the old stuff updated to fresh slings. Damn laziness...

I wonder if if would be OK to girth hitch a shorter sewn sling (like a quick draw length) and eliminate the knot. Knots are know weak links, but then again, the girth hitch is a knot too.

To make up for my earlier smartass comment, Mountain Tools does re-slinging work: http://www.mtntools.com/cat/rclimb/cams/mt_camresling.htm
$6.50/ea

You could even get double-length slings for your Camalots or Friends for only $1 more.

yeah i like it as a quick fix but fishproducts.com will do it for $3.50, or $2.50 if you supply the webbing.
