I have a bunch of old ropes that I'm finally emotionally ready to say goodbye to. What's the most environmentally responsible way to get them out of my basement?
Sterling has a rope recycling program. More info here

You can also reuse those ropes (just not for climbing!)
I've given mine to a scout troop, they chop it up and use it for knot practice.
Another climber I talked to sells his on craigslist for $20 with the express notice it isn't suitable for climbing. But people always need ropes, for a truck, whatever.
I've sold a few on craigslist for 25 each. Just make sure to let them know its not for live load situations due to age. Thats a chunk towards your new one.
Rugs are great, but I can only handle so much handicraft. Recycling through sterling is probably the most eco friendly route.
If that didn't work, look up item number 290227096525 I shipped it to the bidder in only the finest of pizza boxes. The story is 100% true. I cut the line in 1/2 and I'll sell the other 1/2 in a different weave soon.
For those living in the Colorado Front Range area, the Boulder Rock Club acts as a collection point for the Sterling Rope recycling program. I just dropped off 25 years worth of old ropes to them.
