Me leading "Sasquatch." Just before the small overhang

I was trying on shoes saturday and tried on the new 5.10 Copperhead. It fit extremely comfortably and I really like the design. Has anyone climbed in these before?

I just got a pair. I ordered a 12 because that's the biggest they make. I wear 13 street, but I've heard they'll stretch a size. I haven't used them yet, however. I hope they do stretch because my knuckles curl a bit now and for thin cracks i'd like to have basically flat toes.

On a delightfully exposed traverse on the North Ridge of Mount Stuart.

I'm glad you mentioned that about the sizing. I'm looking at ordering a pair and called 5.10 to ask about stretch, and the customer service person told me to go down 2 full sizes, as they stretch a lot??? After your comment Peter, I'm not sure what size to get.

I would assume that the fit/stretch is similar to the Piton. The piton also has a ton of rubber over the toe which sales persons will tell you limits stretch and is unlined leather.

I wear a 10.5 street and I purchased an 11 Piton for an all day shoe. Now they are way too loose. If I had purchased a 10.5 now they would be just barely snug. a 10 would be fairly tight but not overcurling the toes and a 9.5 would still be good for high performance edging but IMO be too tight for all day crack use. If I was buying the Piton again, and I assume the copperhead is the *same, I would get a size 10 or if this was an indian creek shoe maybe a size 10.5. All based on my experience with the Piton. The copperhead may fit differently

  • Note: the Piton has an excessively large toe box area and the Copperhead seems to contour a ton better around my toes. So I doubt it would need to be as tight for the same perfomance.

But has anyone actually climbed in these things???

By the look of them, the copperhead seems (to me, anyway) to be most similar to the moccasym. I haven't tried them on, but I suspect they'll stretch like crazy. my street shoe size is 11-11.5 and a 9.5 moccasym is tight at first, but gets to be relatively comfortable once broken in. I might be able to go down another half size, but the 9.5 works well and I'm not a huge glutton for punishment.

That said, the additional rubber on the copperhead might serve to stop the toebox from stretching as much as it does on the moccasym. eh... probably a good shoe to try on :)

The 5.10 box says unlined leather stretches 1 size. I'm guessing the amount of rubber will stop that somewhat. I've worn mine 3 times for an hour or two at my desk, and they still feel a bit tighter than I'd prefer, so I'd say size down .5 to 1 size. Of course, I haven't climbed an inch in them yet.

purchased them a while ago and used them in the desert about three weeks ago. was jazzed when I first purchased them for the simple fact that the laces weren't going to get shredded like the mythos. after climbing in them I thought that they were just okay. nothing to write home about. didn't think that they had much performance to them. I've been climbing in the miura velcro and am totally amped. can't wait for the TC pro to come out. one of the opportunities that I found with the copperheads is after climbing routes like 4x4 and marshmallow at the 4x4 wall I had these bloody gobies that formed in front of my ankle, that I had never proceeded to have in other shoes. I think that the copperheads a little bit lower. the shoe is okay, I would hold out for the TC if I had to do it over again...I would sell my 9.5 's if someone is interested. they have 2 days in the desert on them.

Climbed a pitch or two in them last weekend, but didn't get a lot of foot jamming in. They seemed pretty comfy, and I think they will stretch fine. So, I'd say size down 1-1.5 sizes. My foot is fairly low volume, and I honestly wish the toe box was a little smaller.

What is the Rock like where you are doing your climbing? edges (teeny edges?), smearing, etc??? Vertical, overhanging, slightly slabby?

The Pitons had an oversized toe box too. But the copperhead felt good on my foot at the store.

I climb on fairly high friction sandstone. Usually very steep, but most cracks tend to be more vertical. Cracks are usually irregular in shape, but are occasionally parallel sided. Where I'd climb, I'd only wear the Copperheads while climbing crack. For technical/slab, I wear Miuras. For overhangs/pockets/jugs (80% of what I climb), I wear Predators.

The Copperheads tend to fit about 1 1/2 to 2 sizes smaller than what most people wear in other 5.10 shoes, not all peoples feet are the same though so use this advice as a starting point to gauging your size. Also since these are designed as crack climbing shoes going down a full size (to compensate for stretch) will allow your toes to remain flat, if you were looking for more of a sport fit (for those of you who don't do much crack climbing but think the shoe looks sexy) 2 sizes down would be a good place to start.
The Piton has a wider toe box than Copperhead so those that have wide feet may prefer the partially lined Piton over the unlined Copperhead.

Off topic, but since Five Ten is around.... Whats the deal with the Rock Wrench? Is that a super sporto type shoe, or an edging shoe that could be a trad shoe? When is it coming out?
