There was short story about me in the August 2012 issue, with a couple of photos. Still have not been paid for the photo use. Anybody else have this problem ??

It's not a bit sum, but over 4 months seems a bit much

Have you tried calling them?

Hey John, I know some people there. I think their accounting department is in California or something, so it kind of makes some financial stuff take a while to process. They're good people, maybe just a little disorganized or busy with the end of the year etc.

I'd email or call again and wait. They'll pay up if they said they would.

Did you have a verbal agreement or written contract with them? Did you agree upon a price beforehand?

By the way, I read the article and it sounds like you have done some ballsy climbing!

Ya- written contract and yes i have heard from some "people" I don't do net 150...

When i didn't get any satisfaction after almost 5 months.. YES it's time to go public

I had a contract and wrote a feature article for them this year. I submitted my work in january and didn't receive payment until november... I did get paid in full, but it took A LOT of pestering.

I second the idea that it seems the problem is with the accounting dept. and not the folks who create the magazine content.

Magazines are notorious for not paying photographers, take it from a photographer who used to work for magazines. Just keep sending them invoices.

i have published some articles with Climbing, and yes, expect 4+ months for payment. I think of it as an unexpected bonus check in the mail, because by the time they actually poniy up I've usually forgotten about it.

Still waiting for a check from July. When i last emailed them, maybe in October sometime, they said they were just now processing checks from January/February so it would be a while til i got mine. Wasn't sure if they were just blowing me off but based on what others have said it appears they were telling the truth. So maybe one sunny day i'll open my mailbox and score a check.

Notice that Climbing Mag is no longer featured on the front page of MP?

Sounds like a cash flow problem, they pay who can cause them trouble first.

I think I got a check after a couple years. I wrote it off, but maybe someone closing books at year end had a strange bout of good karma, or something. I'd still submit something if they asked. They have cool people there, you don't really have to be a super-alpinist to have a solid concept, and you reach a good amount of climbers with a rigging, adventure, or technique idea that won't get lost in these online forum beatdowns.

Hanson is on a 30 year 'wait-list' for something and still pissed about it; don't think it was Climbing, though, maybe North Farce.

Who would want to read anything you wrote? I can barely understand you when you speak...

love climbing but it took me nine months of pestering to get paid for a feature. Not chump change. I finally got it but it made me think twice about writing for the future if it was a big project.

Alpinist however, paid within a few weeks.

I know other photographers who have had long delays in getting paid by Climbing and at least one author who's had a significant hassle with one of their editors.

OTOH, if you're ever lucky enough to work with Patagonia, they pay well and promptly.

You'll probably have better results if you're diplomatic and call them up directly.
