Hey all. I'm leaving for Vietnam January 3rd. I'll be travelling around Vietnam for maybe a month, then Thailand for a month. I intend to climb and dive. I would love to meet up with some climbers. I and am going to try to climb in Ha Long Bay. I hear there is some good deep water solo. Also, I intend to climb in Krabi in Thailand. If anyone wants to meet up or has other suggestions, please let me know. Oh, and I'm a guy in his early 30s in case anyone was wondering.

I'll be in Chiang Mai lurking around Crazy Horse (IMHO better than Krabi for moderates) the 2nd half of Janurary if you want to meet up.

DWS in Vietnam in January may not happen, tides are better in summer and fall and the winter weather in northern Vietnam is not great. The sport climbing is very good though.
Thakhek in Laos is supposed to be very good and is relatively easy to get to from Thailand or Vietnam.

Good to know about the tides. I'll probably go there and check things out anyway, since it's supposed to be gorgeous. Are you guys bringing your rope and draws? Trying to decide if I should bring my rope, but it adds so much weight.

If you're not bringing any of your own gear, rent from Asia Outdoors on Cat Ba island in Vietnam (near Ha Long Bay). Imo best sport climbing in the country can be found at Butterfly Valley on Cat Ba Island. There is said to also be some sport in Ninh Binh but I never checked it out as it didn't look as good or well developed. Tam Coc's limestone mountains and pagodas (in Ninh Binh) is cool to see as is Lan Ha Bay's limestone karst formations (near Cat Ba Island in Ha Long Bay).

When you go to Thailand, go to Tonsai, go straight to Tonsai. There will be climbers there to partner with and it is a great little community. To get there catch the ferry at the same place as for Railay West outside of Krabi town and tell the boatman to just drop you at Tonsai. You'll invariably be greeted by a dreadlocked climber with a Chang beer in his hand and a smile on his face. If you're on a budget, stay at the Andaman bungalows up the hill ($5/day). Railay West features some higher end establishments. There's good climbing to be had on all sides (Railay West, Railay East, and Tonsai). Also DWS in this area is pretty sick too and relatively cheap ($35/pp day from the climbing shop near Andaman).

Neima, I'd love to meet up and do some climbing. I'll have my rope and 12 draws.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
