Mt Whitney April
Any suggestions on where to climb locally (San Diego) that isn't completely affected by this recent heat/humidity? Woodson, Santee, and Mission Trails are my frequents. Sdm1568

Big Boulder, just a bit downhill from Temple of Ka...
Elevation + Shade = Cool

Don't know much about SD county, except the locals tell me it's to hot.

So head to T&S, S is really nice after 3pm.... and T has lots of shade if you plan ahead.

Me... southern sierra, up near the top of Sherman Pass.... several small crags, some with creeks flowing, "Quality Cliff" is one of them .... stay in the shade.

Made in the shade.....

J Tree after blizzard
When I lived there, I climbed at Glen Cliff, which faces North (right by the border checkpoint on I-8, east of SD), but I have heard there may be access issues there now due to raptor nesting. If you can still climb there it's a fun spot.

Mission Gorge cools off nicely in the evening during summer, and there are a few shady routes there, mostly in the Middle Earth area. There is a great birds eye photo on this website that shows where the shady routes are at MG.

Another option is to camp out at McCain Valley for the night and get an early start on Lowenbrau (sp?) pinnacle. There is some shade there. McCain is a great spot. You can do the same at the other great desert areas nearby (Culp Valley, Dos Cabezas, Valley of the Moon). Summer nights in the desert are awesome!

Finally, there are some boulders in Carlsbad (Palomar Airport Rd. & El Camino Real). That's all you get for coastal climbing in SD, and it may or may not be on private property, but they have great variety and are enough for a good pump.
