Hi there
I'll be visting Utah in September and hope to get some climbing in at American Fork. Where is the best place to stay? How easy is it to meet up with other climbers?
Thanks in advance
Vanessa

American Fork Canyon is a great climbing destination about 45 min from SLC and 30 min from Provo. There are campgrounds throughout the canyon. Developed campgrounds such as Granite Flats require reservations, $9 per night. I recommend reserving now. If your more adventuress, you can always travel down one of the many dirt roads and find a primitive camp site, 4x4 may be required.

There is a fee to access the canyon passes are $6 for 1-3 day use, $12 for 7 days, A NP pass will give you access as well.

If you have an off day check out Timpanogos Cave National Monument.

As far as meeting climbers, continue to hit up MP, it is relatively easy to meet up with such easy access. The Wasatch front is home to tons of climbers.

Don't mind the glued on holds, its what holds the canyon together!

A national parks pass will get you in for free!

If you get the little mill campsites you will be right in the middle of the climbing, and it has water, is near the river, and even has some climbs and boulders in the campsite.

As super Fluke said hit up MP to find partners, its normally not to bad. But I might be available in September to climb.

If the road up the canyon is still open and it's not too cold, there's really really nice free camping in alpine meadows...but it might be a little late in the year, I haven't been up there in september

Right now the campground spots are $21/night; it's possible that goes down after Labor Day. I didn't think Little Mill was that great-- lots of picnickers. I think I'd prefer to sleep in my SUV at one of the pullouts. According to the FS, there is no dispersed camping in the "lower half," beyond that (wherever that is) you should be fine.

I work near AF canyon. If you want to climb after 5 on a weekday hit me up. I know a couple other AF climbers as well. Take care!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
