Some Like it Hot (5.12b). Devils Tower, WY

Devils Tower National Monument is recruiting volunteer Climbing Rangers for the summer 2012 season. Volunteers will climb routes on duty with NPS Rangers, provide information to other climbers, and serve on the search and rescue team. This is a great opportunity to gain experience and build your resume if you want to work for land management agencies in the future. We are looking for climbers willing to commit to at least two weeks of volunteering in July, August, or September. Volunteers will have free camping and free entry to the park.

Devils Tower features traditional crack climbing with long, high-quality pitches. It is in the northeast corner of Wyoming, close to other climbing areas such as Ten Sleep, Spearfish, and the Needles.

Requirements: Ability to lead traditional routes up to 5.10, Grade III. Must be professional and work well with other people.

I would love to do this...however, i have questions. Could I do the last two weeks in September? I work for a Guiding service in Utah and those months are the busy time. also, would there be any pay at all involved? what about room and board? I would love to go do some route on the tower. I am in zion right now getting up in some cracks and would love to do it out there for a bit too.

Thanks!

Unfortunately there is no pay involved. We had another climbing ranger employed for the season who left for another position. Thanks to the complications of government hiring it is too late to hire someone else, and we are trying to creatively fill that gap.

But still, you get to come do a lot of climbing on excellent routes and pad the resume a bit. In exchange you mostly just have to answer visitors questions and not get me killed when we share a rope, which makes for a good road trip.
