Can you teach high school chemistry? Do you like to climb? Do you want to live for free in Idyllwild, CA, home of Tahquitz and Suicide Rock? If so, read on!

Idyllwild Arts Academy, a boarding high school, is in need of a full time chemistry teacher for the 2016-2017 school year. It is a full time position with great benefits. Here are just some of the perks:

  • Free housing

  • 403b with matching
  • About 20 weeks of paid holidays per year
  • Academic day ends by 2pm or earlier most days
  • No teaching certificate required, but it'd be nice if you had one.
  • Another climber works here who will have a nearly identical work schedule

Requirements

  • At least a BA in chemistry or related field. Advanced degrees preferred but not required.
  • Experience teaching, either in the classroom or as a tutor. More experience preferred, obviously.
  • Desire to be a high quality teacher
  • Accepting of other cultures and students socio-economic backgrounds
  • You must be a dorm parent. Obligations include about 1 night of duty per week and about 1 full weekend every 4-5 weeks.

Now let me get into the part you're actually interested in, the climbing!

Idyllwild, CA is home to two of the most historic trad climbing venues in the world: Tahquitz and Suicide Rock. In less than 10 minutes from your doorstep, you can be hiking up to some world class rock during your frequent afternoons off and on weekends. In the winter, when its often too wet to climb in Idyllwild, head on to Joshua Tree! Two hours after you leave school at 2pm on a Friday, you can find yourself roping up for a few pitches before dark in Hidden Valley or getting 10 of your favorite solos in before dark.

Did I mention you get 20 weeks of paid vacation? That's 1 week for Thanksgiving, 3 weeks for Christmas, 2 weeks for Spring Break, and 10-12 weeks for Summer. Get some wall climbing in at Zion during Spring Break to prepare yourself for June in Yosemite Valley. Once it gets too hot in the valley, just truck on up to Tuolumne or the High Sierra until late August. Spend the long afternoons in the fall testing yourself on your home crags of Tahquitz and Suicide during the prime fall season. When Thanksgiving and Christmas break roll around, get on down to Joshua Tree or Mexico for some quality time in the sun. Of course, all of these options only involve a 6 hour drive or less. You can always go further with this much time off!

Don't feel like travelling much during your off time? No problem. Idyllwild is comfortable and climbable almost all year if you follow the shade or sun, depending on the season.

Like to boulder? There are a few decent spots located near town, but the prime bouldering real-estate is a short 45 minute drive away at Black Mountain, world class granite bouldering! More time on your hands? Check out the Tramway boulders on the other side of San Jacinto Peak.

Tired of climbing? Want something else to do? No problem! In less than 5 minutes from your door by bike, you'll be at the central hub of over 20 miles of high quality mountain biking trails. These trails are also great for trail running, for all you ultra-runners out there. The Idyllwild area has hundreds of miles of hiking and backpacking trails all accessible in less than 20 minutes of driving.

Want a complete change of scenery? San Diego and Los Angeles are only 2 hours away, depending on traffic. The closest beach is about 1.5 hours away. Santa Barbara is 4 hours away. Palm Springs is only 45 minutes away.

Last but not least: what if you are married or have a significant other? Your partner does not need to work for the school to live and eat for free. Is your partner a teacher too? There's a good chance he/she could be hired on full time. If your partner isn't a teacher, there are other jobs available on campus and a few options in town.

Interested? Send me a PM and I'll put you in contact with the right people. All fun aside, you need to be serious about teaching to get this job.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
