Looking to visit my parents in rome ny this coming weekend. I've never climbed ice out there. I've heard of salmon river falls? Tinker falls? Anyone need a partner for the coming weekend or possibly the next. Let me know. Looking to stay reasonably local, 2hr drive or so, syracuse area. Just get in touch. Safe competent belayer, etc...
I'll be in the Great Sacandaga Lake region this coming weekend. I have experience on top rope and as a second but none on lead. Looks like Rome is about a two hour drive. Maybe something in between to keep the drive short?
Do you know locations? Ideally we could hit a spot you've been to before that way no monkeying with getting lost and setting up. I am happy to TR or lead, but if you want to get on some steeper stuff I'd be looking for a hike around & TR, because I have a shakey lead head and wouldn't want to get to a spot, not be up for it and disappoint. I'll lead up to 3, possibly 3+, but really looking for good well protected ice. Still trying to build my confidence on lead this season. And now trying to work out new crampons.
This will be my first time ice climbing in the Dacks. Researching locations as we speak. I feel confident on 3 and would probably lead it although my rack of screws is limited.
Grade 3 and 3+ would be awesome. If shorter 4 is available, a few laps might be fun.
I just looked where Great Sacandaga Lake is. Kind of out of the way. And I also think you're going to be hard pressed to find ice without traveling significantly farther up into the Dacks. Let me know what you find though.
Would really like a partner for Salmon River Falls or Central NY area. Just looked up that location, super close by, Jim Lawyer has an unbelievable public guide for the area. Any takers let me know. Also going to look into it further but this appears to be an explicitly lead area??? "Rap into the gorge..." Going to check further...
