Cellular data service on Longs Peak

Howdy ya'll. Kind of a specific question here, but I'm heading up to the Chasm View wall tomorrow to do a couple routes, but I might need to receive and reply to a work email on my iPhone while I'm up there.

I generally have no need to use cell service while in the mountains, so it's been quite some time since I even checked on the service up there. But I was hoping that someone might have some insight on if and where I might be able to get a couple bars of service while up there climbing.

I have Verizon and was able to intermittently send texts on Broadway, so I imagine you may have limited luck up on top of chasm view.

I wouldn't rely on the data to reliably download email, especially if several MB of data are incoming. I certainly wouldn't rely on it if these job emails are critical... Good luck.

It really depends on where you are and what you have a line of site towards. From flying buttress and Meeker I've had service with Verizon, but from Chasm and Mills Glacier area (and the whole approach) not so much. If you can see Estes you might have data, if you can't then maybe you will still get lucky?

A few weeks ago I had LTE on the chasm view wall and diamond/broadway. Also a bit of service on the east edge of chasm lake, but only enough to send texts. I am on verizon.

Better stick to Movement bouldering gym. That way you can take fatty bong rips and do your tinder at the same time that you climb

I got calls from the summit like 10 years ago. I don't usually have a phone with me so I can't comment about recently.

I have AT&T so maybe my reply won't be as helpful, but I had extremely good service at the bivy sites above Chasm View a couple weeks ago (was able to browse and post online / send texts no problem).

As others have said - it's spotty. I have Verizon and was able to get service on Broadway, as I recall. However, above Broadway and around chasm lake I didn't.

I don't think I'd expect to be able to do anything with email.

Wonderful advice, it sounds like you speak from experience.

To everyone who actually had substantive feedback, thank you. I appreciate it. That was more or less what I expected, but wanted to see if the situation had changed since my last trip out there. I think that I'll just have one of my employees handle the email for me, not the biggest deal in the world, just wanted to make sure I was covering my bases before I left.

It would be so cool to set up an "office" at 13,000 feet and kind of hang out, and work all day.

4G LTE was available immediately above the Crack of Delight raps on Broadway, and I had enough service to send and receive texts from mid-way up the North Chimney all the way to the top.

Did you find any tinder matches up there?

I find Verzion to have the best backcountry coverage. If anyone gets a signal it's usually the phone with Verzion.

I've had success with renting a sat phone when I need to keep in touch back home. You get some condescending looks if you run into others but can be a money saver if your work needs you.

Hope this doesn't waste your time :)

I've had clients in AK rent sat phones, set-up hot spots through the phone, and do e-mails on their tablets with everything solar powered. Hard to get away from technology these days!

Good info! Yesterday was an odd exception to my typical work requirements, but that isn't to say it won't come up again, definitely going to remember that for future reference.... Oh, where do you rent it from?

I rented something then I bought a Irdium 9575 and one of their annual plans. Zero problems.. Between having to buy a phone at Verzion and their monthly contract prices the sat phone isn't too expensive of an option... OK that's what I told my wife but anyway :)

Eli,

First I dream of retiring in CO and living in your house you have for sale.

I'm that guy.. On the phone.. In the woods.. Talking loud.. Acting important.. To be young and cocky again..

I'm all over RMNP several times a week all year long and don't even own a cell phone.

Hey I should've told you that my rental phone didnt work in dense forests or canyons. Be sure to rent a decent phone like the 9575 if you will be in that type of terrain.
