Camping Recommendations near Denver

Hey all,
I will be out in Colorado next week on business, and then with friends for Memorial Day weekend.
We wanted to do an overnight trip Friday in at least somewhat of a remote area. Anything within 6-8 miles round trip would be fine.

My initial thoughts were heading south of Denver and going into the Lost Creek WIlderness, and recommendations for trails in there, conditions or maybe a better spot would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Nick

Lost Creek Wilderness is a possibility, though not especially remote. Also not remote, but friendly to your preferred trip length, is Golden Gate Canyon State Park about an hour west of Denver.

You can get info about Lost Creek thru the Forest Service: the rangers are in the South Platte district and can give you accurate reports on trail conditions. Golden Gate is a state park, and you can actually talk to humans on the phone there.

If these aren't remote enough for ya, I understand. The people you contact will know of other places. Snow cover this time of year is going to be a factor anywhere above about 9,000 feet and possibly even lower.

Have fun, wherever you wind up.

Thanks very much Flynn, I'm going to call the Rangers office for conditions......yeah normally I'd want to get really remote but that can't happen with this group, especially for just 1 night.

The Cottonwood Pass area above Crested Butte is pretty remote. Also real high altitude though. I have no idea if it is open though. You can contact Gunnison County Public Works to find out if it is open. I have not actually done any backpacking up there, just car camping, but there are plenty of trails.

You could head up North to Wyoming, and check out the Reese Mountain area that you have to hike into.
A new book just came out for this. Although I have not been there, it looks like a fun time.
Sport & trad options up in the area. Also some car camping, and cragging also in areas just outside the Reese Mountain spot…

Cheers!

Lost Creek would be pretty cool. Haven't been to the other spots. You could do the 6 mile trek to McCurdy Park Tower. There is a cool camp spot in some boulders across from the tower and water. To me it looks like a mini Devil's Tower for some reason. Generally easy hiking until you hit some killer switchbacks then drop down into the valley.

Nick---- MCCurdy Park tower is in Lost Creek- Tarryall area.

Coming from the Colorado Springs take highway 24 west to Lake George (very small town), about a half mile or so from the county store make a right turn onto (It's the only right turn after town) onto highway 77/ tarryall rd. Take this about 17 miles to Twin Eagles Traihead. That's where we've started the few times I was back there. From the TH take lizard rock trail #658 follow this to the brookside-mccurdy trail #607. Once you get passed the switchbacks and hit a type of saddle you'll drop down into the valley onto mccurdy park trail. You'll see boulders and a field on the left side of trail; that's where we camped. About 10 minutes downhill from the tower. The directions come from South Platte Climber's Guide. It's a fairly easy hike in I think about 6 miles one way, but there are some tough switchbacks to be had. I've seen people speed hike in, climb, and leave the same day. Good luck with all the rain/ snow we've been having.

Fun trip and just so you know "Finding Bigfoot" did an episode back there in which a couple of campers said they were harassed by a bigfoot! LOL. I've never seen or heard one. And congrats on the Inc 500 rating.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
