Ropes direct to the hangers... Is that common practice out there?

So at one time, someone's thoughts went something like

'boy, those 5 bolts look pretty sketchy...I better add a sixth."

Every fixed line we came across out there (catwalks approach, Ahwahnee / Guano, and rap anchors) had ropes tied through the bolts. Some were bent pretty harshly but none of the sheath was worn through on any of them. I'm amazed somebody knows how to tie a double bowline on a bite through two points!

Some peoples brains just crave symmetry.
