Now that's talent -- taking a mundane stance on a slabby route and making it into an commentary on the scenery Up There. Well played! And the light from the descending sun doesn't hurt one bit.

Actually, the "commentary" running through Grieger's head is "HOLY COW...look at the big fire building DOWN THERE."
As an interesting historical footnote to the photo, we were eventually forced to retreat from the Needles via Quaking Aspen as the road from Johnsondale to Kernville was engulfed.
Was this taken around the time of the McNally fire? I was up there as the fire started spreading and my recollection is that the road from Springville/Quaking Aspen (190) was touch and go... we ended up going back to LA through California Hot Springs and Ducor. That fire was a monster -- effectively ended the season around the 4th of July in 2002, if memory serves. I hope we don't see another like it for a long, long time.
