There is another one on one of the trails to Tahquitz. It's been there since before I start climbing in '78. Some of them are mine, but I have no idea why it started (or why I put some in!). Homo sapiens are funny.
That's the Penny Tree. In the old days climbers would pound dimes into the log to represent the thin edges they would be climbing on at Suicide Rock - sort of a totemic ritual. It used to be dimes, but now it's pennies...inflation I guess.
