The start of the rough road up to Laurel Canyon.

Description

Laurel Canyon is a beautiful canyon that has some extensive, although mostly poor quality, rock formations.

The canyon was scoured by glaciers (the drive up tackles the rocky morraine), and most of the rock in the lower sections is highly fractured and poor quality.

The farther you travel up the canyon the better the rock becomes. To reach the best quality rock you'll have to hike passed the parking lot high into the hills.

Getting There

From Mammoth Lakes take the Sherwin Creek Road, by taking a left off Old Mammoth Road as it makes it sharp turn from north-south to east-west, just south of the Vons shopping center and The Stove restaurant. After 3.9 miles from the junction of Sherwin Creek Road and Old Mammoth Road to the road to Laurel Lakes (4S86). High clearance vehicles are recommended for this road. This road can also be reached via Sherwin Creek Road at its junction with US395, 1.3 miles south of the junction of 203 to Mammoth.
