Lawson Peak

Description

A good spot for something different. Probably enough climbing to have a fun day. More than that if you throw in bouldering too. The rock quality is excellent and reminiscent of Corte Madera.

The summit is a fun little hike in itself with views of Corte Madera and San Diego's southern mountains.

There's not much documentation on the area but many obvious lines exist. The main wall has TR bolts that can be accessed from the top. There are also a few large boulders with cracks.

Getting There

8 East to 79/Japatul rd South. Left onto Lyons Valley Road. Park at mile marker 13 (appears to be gone) which is just at the base of a dirt road. The dirt road leads uphill to the summit and the climbing. The dirt road appears to be popular to those with moderately serious 4wd vehicles and takes you to within 5 minutes of the climbing. Otherwise, hike up the road for about 1 hour.

If you hike up to the summit, around the backside you can climb up a 4th class chimney into a cave that then opens up to the summit. A neat little experience.

CONDITION REPORT

This one and Gaskill , a mile or so to the north is beside the proposed Sunrise Powerlink 500Kv powerline. Long story short this is not a good place for the line, yet another great rec site messed up. Write Will Metz at the Forest Service and ask him to do something about this. I think he is making the decision about this area.

Awesome peak and ditto for Gaskill just to the North. Thanks!

A decent little trail up Gaskill , btw, is on the north. skinny and steep but will get you up there for starters.
