Randy Leavitt on Ionic Strength. Bob Horan Collec...

Description

The Atom Smasher Boulders are a cluster of HUGE cleanly cleaved boulders in the north Wonderland. They are near The Ivory Towers and the Timbuctu Towers. All routes are trad bolt protected. There are several classics and all routes get stars. The superclassic of the area is the often photographed arete Ionic Strength (5.12a ****). The route Gumshoe (5.10d**) is seen on the cover of the Bartlett guide to the Wonderland. Also recommended is Isotope (5.9**) for the classic moderate of the area.

Getting There

Approach via the Boyscout trail. Approximately 3+ miles of flat walking, allow one hour for the approach.

Ionic Strength 5.12a  CA : Joshua Tree National Park : ... : Atom Smasher Boulders
This excellent route climbs the southwest arete of a giant boulder on high-quality stone. Not really a sport route, but reasonably well-protected with technical and balancy moves up an arete that steepens and curves right near the top. A progressive route back when it was first done this is still a worthy tick if in the area. ...[more]   Browse More Classics in CA
