Who were/are the Cohns? How have they gone about retaining title to this little slice of heaven for so long? Do they still live there, and if so, how so? Via Google Earth, several structures are visible. Why were they reputed to be so hostile towards climbers?

I was in JTree last April and witnessed 2 cars leave the Cohn property. They were packed with kids and baggage, as if they had been staying out there for a vacation. They drove across the road, dropped some trash in a dumpster, and drove away.
So it appears that someone still uses the place.
I've heard one of the owners even posts on Supertopo....
The Cohn property has several dwellings on it and a few different caretakers. Some are long time local climbers and have been known to post here albeit rarely.
Nice gig staying there, can't beat the views that's for sure.
The Cohn Property, a private inholding, strange as it may seem is private property within a National Park. The owners laid claim to the land and were living there prior to the land surrounding it being declared a National Monument in 1936 (it became a National Park in 1994).
