Watergate Rock.

Description

Several hundred yards southwest of the Comic Strip formation is this solitary crag sitting on the desert floor. The majority of routes tend to be short face climbs, although some cracks are to be found here as well. Routes range in difficulty from 5.6 to 5.11d with most in the 5.10 and under range making this a good location for climbers seeking that range. Highlights include H.R. Hardman (5.8), T-N-T (5.10c) and Dirty Tricks (5.11d).

Getting There

Approach as for the main Comic Book formation, but veer off right following a faint path to the obvious formation. The hike takes about 15 miutes from the car.

The area is a slab formation with some fun 5.7-5.9 problems. I think there are three top rope anchors for these slab problems. Lead bolts are present, but run out. To get to these routs you have to scramble up to a large deck (and further up for the anchors).

yesterday we were out messing around on the "Slabs" and had somewhat of a Bee problem. I am not sure if there is a hive right at the base, but the damned things were there in the hundreds flying around. We had to bail leaving the area completely. Could be Africanized bees??? Can you tell the difference by how the look?

The Africanized ones make strange clicking sounds when they talk.
