BETA PHOTO: Predator Rock from the road into Box Canyon West

Less developed and with fewer standout climbs to choose from than Box Canyon East makes this a less crowded and slightly quieter area despite it's close proximity to the other. The suberb Predator Wall sees the bulk of the traffic here and luckily the parking area and popular south face can be seen from the road which makes deciding where to visit an easy choice.

Popular crags here include Sunshine Face, Predator Wall, Arch Rocks and The Dude Ranch.

Getting There

Drive in from the paved road passing the Entrance Area Crags and the Camp Host and continue ahead until even with the Roadside Crag and then head right (west) to join a road that heads south into another canyon that runs parallel to the main one with Raven Rocks etc.

Continue past a few rough spots in the road (high clearance recommended), crest a small hill and then the Predator Wall will come into view. The parking area you choose will depend upon the crag you are visiting so check the individual crag pages for more detailed parking information. Approach times vary from 2-10 minutes in this area typically.

Stick clip the first bolt, and then climb the vertical/slightly overhanging face past a series of overlapping roofs via thin edges, underclings and sidepulls (a kneebar can be found past the 2nd bolt) to the fourth bolt. The crux is a continuous series of bouldery moves on small edges from the fourth to fifth bolt as you work past some overlaps and a shallow left-facing corner. Once past the crux, work left to gain the sixth bolt and better holds and then hang on for the ride to the anchors. Te...[more]   Browse More Classics in CA
