Chalking up!

Hey, guys! I'm new here and new to climbing. Been looking around for a place to go outside top roping where it hopefully gets a lot of sun so I won't freeze out there on the natural rock. I just started climbing (outside a bit and in the gym) in November, so very new to it. I'm climbing 5.9s right now, working my way up to 5.10. I have not done any lead climbing yet, so I'm looking forward to learning that soon! :) I don't enjoy bouldering quite as much as rope climbing, so I was interested in hearing about some good locations that have some 5.8-5.9 routes that I could go practice on, since it's a lot harder to get outside and climb in the winter, as my frequenting the gym has proven. ;)

Thanks a lot!

White Rock has quite a few good crags for top roping in the sun as well as practicing leading. As long as the sun is out and it is not too windy you can climb on very cold days there.

Gallows Edge would be a good place to practice leading. The Overlook, Big Enchilada and Potrillo are all good places to TR.

The Socorro Box is another good bet in winter, and almost all year!

Gallup, NM, has a crag called Mentmore--Has a great selection of climbs 5.6-5.10. You could easily spend a day doing those--All are easy to TR as well. Also a good spot to start leading, when you're ready. About 2 hrs from ABQ.
