As I recall Lee Marsh had a cat that was known for doing laps on the classic dihedral on the bucksnort slabs... the cat would climb onto the back of hapless climbers on the route for a convenient ride, or so the story goes...

Me at the summit of Inner Course (5.4) in the Outlets. Long, lovely, mellow route. Well protected even. My favorite lead from the trip.

In a zoo in California, a mother tiger gave birth to a rare set of triplet tiger cubs. Unfortunately, due to complications in the pregnancy, the cubs were born prematurely and due to their tiny size, they died shortly after birth.

The mother tiger after recovering from the delivery, suddenly started to decline in health, although physically she was fine. The veterinarians felt that the loss of her litter had caused the tigress to fall into a depression. The doctors decided that if the tigress could surrogate another mother's cubs, perhaps she would improve.

After checking with many other zoos across the country, the depressing news was that there were no tiger cubs of the right age to introduce to the mourning mother. The veterinarians decided to try something that had never been tried in a zoo environment. Sometimes a mother of one species will take on the care of a different species. The only "orphans" that could be found quickly, were a litter of weaner pigs. The zoo keepers and vets wrapped the piglets in tiger skin and placed the babies around the mother tiger.
Thanks, Mike. It needed to be done.

I have a "climbing cat". He follows us anywhere we go. Camping, hiking, climbing, he'll even get in a canoe. When he was a kitten, we took him everywhere with us, and now it's just natural to him. When he was 4 weeks, I threw him in my pack to rap down a cliff, and expected him to freak out (it was the only way down). When I got to the bottom, I opened the pack and he was sleeping.

When he comes to the crag with us, sometimes he'll see us climbing something and scramble up some 4th class stuff to meet us on top (he usually BEATS us!). He still doesn't understand why we always take the hard way up though. When he sees/hears us packing up, he comes back and follows us out. The most he's hiked so far is 4 miles on an overnight backpacking trip. I like the fact that if he gets hurt or even just tired, he's small enough to carry.

Oh and he loves the snow!

I'll try to get some pics up if I can

Best thing about him: He doesn't bark

Self portrait at the summit. Perfect day.

'Lily of the Valley' -- i.e. Lily the cat camp resting on her RV perch in Yosemite Valley this summer. (btw, not my cat)

(Not sure if those images will load...will try to fix it later if they don't)

A climbing partner told me about a guy who backpacked back East with his cat. His cat would ride on his pack during the day and take care of the mice all night in the huts, so other backpackers loved to see this guy on the trail.

People say a lot of negative things about Fluffy; saying that he's ugly, saying that he's scary, saying he's not a cat. But we love him all the same.
