Hi friends. I am new to the climbing community. In fact, I do not even own climbing shoes (They are still being shipped).
I live in the area of Ogden Utah! My brother has been climbing for a few years and although we talk about climbing, he lives in Washington.
Basically as the title states, I am looking for some help at knowing where I can begin. What basic beginning gear do I need, some learners tricks and tips, maybe a climbing buddy to teach me some ropes. Anything to point me in the right direction.

I am 22 year old male. Student at Weber State University.

Thank you for your time!

Hi Michael:

I'm an Ogden local. Here's my take:

1. As a Weber State student, you could take the indoor rock climbing class (PE 1527) which is 1-credit, a good way to get your feet wet, and doesn't require gear. After that, you could consider climbing 2 and 3 (PE 1528 and 1529) which are outdoor climbing classes.

A couple places to go on Facebook:

2. Ogden Climbing Community
Not super active, but you could probably find some partners or mentorship there, particularly if you offer to carry the gear, buy gas, provide food, etc.

3. Weber State Climbing Club
An official WSU student organization, though recreational, not competitive. A generally good group of people, they meet at The Front on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Dues are low and it comes with a discounted gym membership option.

4. You can use the Weber State climbing wall located in the Wildcat Arena for free as a student, shoe and harness rental is $5. They are open mostly during the evening.

5. The Weber State Outdoor Program occasionally runs climbing trips and clinics, though it doesn't look like they have their summer calendar up yet.

6. The annual Ogden Climbing Festival is in a couple weeks at the beginning of April. That could be a cool introduction to the climbing scene.

7. The Front Climbing Club at Lincoln and 20th in Ogden has a pretty active community. You might be able to find partners there as well as potentially take a clinic or two.

8. Finally, I'm a certified climbing guide and would be happy to set up a custom day for you. You can PM me on here if you're interested.

i say your best bet is to hit your local climbing gear and start bouldering around and chit chatting with the regulars! 75% of climbers are chill people so your be able to pick up some pointers pretty fast and magazines like rock and ice and climbing will help you as well good luck !!!

start at a gym in your area. meet some people. ask for help. most people enjoy helping someone else out. some climbers are douchebag assholes that think they're too good for everyone else, but those are few and far between. you'll know those people, so just keep your distance. most people are friendly. get outdoors once you start feeling a little more comfortable with climbing. the gym is a good place to start, but it will never replace the real thing. you'll find the more you get outside that the gym just isn't as appealing. it's good for having some fun and training though.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
