Description 

Located in the tiny northern sliver of West Virginia, just east of Wheeling, this area is central for both South-Western PAers and South-Eastern Ohioites. Bear Rock Lake is a small state owned wild life management area. A small oasis of decent boulders is found in the woods here in an otherwise wasteland of rockless country side.

The rock quality here is surprizingly good, considering its location. It is technically sand stone, but I like to call it mudstone, as the grain is more fine and tightly packed then near by areas like Coopers Rock or Coll's Cove. Although there is only about a dozen boulders, they are all very close together and all have at least one classic line. Who knows how they got here, but if you live anywhere near Wheeling its definitely worth checking out!

This small boulder field has seen several climbers over the last 20 years, and some routes here even have their original names. However some things were drop offs because the tops were so dirty. There is still alot of work to do here in terms of scrubbing rock, so if your in the area and would like to help out please let me know.

Getting There 

From Wheeling: Go East on 70 for about 20 miles. Get off at exit 11 Dallas Pike and make a left. Follow conveniant little fish signs on narrow backroads for about 3 miles. Park in the blacktop lot at the bottom of the hill. Follow paved trail around the right side of the small "lake", then follow a mowed path into the woods to the right. About 3-5 minutes down this path you will see the first boulders to your right about 25 feet off the trail, enter just before this boulder to find a decent trail.
