Avulsion Fracture of Metatarsal

Has anyone experienced an avulsion fracture? About 5 weeks ago I twisted my ankle falling down some stairs and broke the inner tip of my fifth metatarsal bone. This is the attachment point for the ligaments/tendons that twist the foot and the violent twisting motion pulled the bone apart. I've been in a cast and am expect that they'll clear me to return to exercise next week.

I'm worried about foot jamming specifically as I return to climbing, as this action exerts a lot of force on that attachment point and the newly-healed bone. Doctor's aren't hugely helpful because they know nothing about climbing and most other activities don't exert a big twisting force on the foot. Anyone had this injury before have any advice?

How long did it take to fully heal?

Thanks man, appreciate the perspective!

Not a foot, but I did the same thing to my hand (avulsion fracture) in a motorcycle crash last year. Took about 6 weeks to come out of the splint, and was sensitive to pressure for a while after that, but it has been about 9 months now and I haven't notice any symptoms for several months. I am climbing harder than ever (which isn't that hard, but anyway, not holding me back).

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
