Hey guys, I'm rafting the Grand Canyon starting this Sunday till Feb 20th then hanging out in the Flagstaff to Phoenix area for a few days. I posted a thread a few months ago and got some good info to narrow down my search for which area to go to. Right now Im thinking Jacks Canyon or The Pit.
Anyone have any good opinions one way or the other. Looking for sport climbs around 5.7 - 5.11. Any info is appreciated!

There are several differences between "The Pit" and "Jacks" that you may not be aware of. First, Jacks Canyon is about 2000 feet lower in elevation than the Pit. This elevational difference makes Jacks - all things equal - warmer than the Pit and, this time of year, may be an important consideration. Moreover, the meandering canyon (of Jacks) enables a greater opportunity to seek sun or shade, depending on the temps.

Second, Jacks has many more climbs in the 5.6 to 5.9 range. Third, there are many more climbs, in general, at Jacks. Fourth, the climbs at Jacks are, in general, shorter than those at the Pit (and softer). Finally, the two areas tend to attract different crowds (because of their location); weekend and longer term climbers may go to Jacks whilst The Pit permits morning or afternoon workouts for locals.

Jacks is also in a remote location; The Pit is just outside Flag. So, your decision to climb at one versus the other also depends on the comforts that you are looking for.

I like both areas but, to me, they offer dramatically different experiences.

Have fun!

David,
Great info thanks! I was leaning towards Jacks but wanted to make sure I was getting the most bang for my buck. Jacks it is!
