Ancient wall art

The last 2 times I've been up to Jack's, I've had to tell people that there is NO CHOPPING OF TREES OR BRANCHES FOR FIREWOOD at the campsite. One party had a CHAIN SAW and was going to town on what used to be the tallest remaining LIVE tree - because they were going to be there for 5 days. Awesome, right? Douchebaggery.
I'm fairly sure that most people that find their way there must either have a guide book that explains this rule, or has been there with someone that has a guide book, since you don't just "stumble upon" Jack's. I realize that not all rules are worth following, but this one makes sense.
Now, I don't particularly like being that dickhead that confronts people about stuff like that, but I seem to be pretty good at it - if you know me, you know why. In this case I feel it needs to be done because the area is already so stripped of trees. That being said, I'll be up there all next weekend. BRING YOUR OWN FIREWOOD.

At the anchors.

Ditto. Good post!

Firewood is not that hard to come by, folks, but if you find yourself without, we can fit another few people around our fire.

Amen.

Not to mention there's people out there chopping up trees to have these bonfires when it's 70 degrees out. What's up with that?

Beer Anyone?

Hear Hear PB!!!

What I find so amusing about your post is when you said you were headed to Jacks I almost told you that there was no wood up there and if you planning on a fire to bring your own.

There is some dead and down wood down in the canyon that is completely legal to burn.

Common sense when gathering:

-Dead wood only
-Down wood only
-Do not drag large logs which will tear up the trail
-Do not abandon said wood 1/2 way up the trail for others to stumble over or need to move on your behalf.

And while we're at it....

No starting fires at the base of climbs or staging areas!!!
Refrain from having fires when it's windy - think ahead and avoid brush fires.

got bit by the shark at Jacks

A good option for people who do want a fire, is to stop on the way to the canyon to gather wood. There are many places in the pines on the 260 that have alot of down wood.
