Secret stash? Anybody willing to e-mail us?

"No, So don't even ask ... This small crew of New Mexicans isn't telling anyone where their new stash of perfect sandstone is located. However, they did disclose that the canyon is littered with thousands of nicely shaped blocs on bullet stone, the cliff line goes forever, and that access is perfect. Apparently, the area's only locals are a family of bears and and few bald eagles.."

And like six people with big grins on their faces...

Sunset climbing on "Colossus”, 5.10c, at City of Rocks, ID in July 2006

Looks like a nice setting for sure. The surroundings look pretty flat in some of the photos.

Looks like Glorrietta/Pecos area to me. Maybe towards Villanueva state park. Just a guessing from surroundings, and having been (literally) all over New Mexico.

If it is such a big area why are they hiding it? Keeping places secret is stupid unless there are access or environmental issues. What are they going to do put up all the problems then tell people? Whatever.

It's not excusable to be secretive about your climbing areas, but I guess I understand it. What I don't understand is "publicizing" your climbing area and then refusing to tell people where it is. That just doesn't make any sense to me.

it'll come out soon enough......
especially when the oil leases get let and the drilling rigs start coming in

It is a bit silly that a climbing publication editor would promote this in the copy. Since it is secret, noone's interests are served by publicizing....except editor/publisher's, but then their long term credibility is undermined as a result....by spinning the area in a tabloid-esque fashion.

This has been done before. Good copy is tough to get these days i suppose

I agree with micahisaac...or it could be near Farmington...doesn't matter...BM was there years ago.

This reminds me of a time when I was at a gear store in Moab. The guy working there was raving about Mill Creek, about all of the great routes he did there, etc. When I asked him for direction to the area, he responded by telling me: "I'd like to give you directions, but I don't think I should. It's kind of a secret area."

In my opinion, if it's so secret, then you shouldn't spray about it.

I completely agree with Jay on this one, if you have a secret area/local's only area and don't want to share it, then don't spray about it.

Bob, Who is BM? Or did you suggest you dropped a load there in the remote past? I'll keep my eyes peeled for a French postcard with your signature on it...

Hope all is well. Say hello to Laurel for us. Miss ya in the Land of Entrapment.

BM is Bob Murray. He climbed tons of hard stuff all over the SW before most of us could climb out of our cribs. The dudes developing the boulders are generally good cats, but they like to climb every problem before sharing the beta. I have not been there but I saw the infamous W in the photos and he can sniff out a boulder like nobody's business. I would bet they will share the beta in the spring. Feel free to rant though, I will enjoy it.

Oh, that BM. Duh. Sorry Bob, no more rectal humor from me.

Looking up the 2nd pitch. The route climbs the obvious prow above.

That is the great question when you find a new bouldering area in the Southwest. Was "BM" here or not? Likely yes.

I have only ever found one or two areas that I am 99% certain he never climbed at. The other areas he beat everyone to so many years ago. The man went everywhere.

Looks like an awesome place. I too hate having to hear about stuff I want, but just can't have! If it was truly top secret, it wouldn't be in a climbing magazine probably. It will probably become widely known soon. Hope I get to check it out one day. This isn't that "Hueco II" is it?

Could be around Roy, NM. Just a guess. I hear Cacye Weber bouldered out there years ago.

2 of the climbers in the photos I recognize as longtime Las Cruces, NM climbers. I suspect the area is actually in southern NM (Gila?).

The Las Cruces/Lubbock crews tend to be very secretive of their climbing areas, yet they love to spray about them online. just check out the BS that has gone down at Last Chance Canyon.

When did Lubbock get appended to Las Cruces or NM? I would like to protest this. We will give Texas Lubbock back along with Clovis and Maljamar in exchange for Hueco Tanks. A fair trade all around.

I agree that it would be a good trade for you but you ar stuck with all of the hayseeds from TX. The real tragedy is that most NM climbing areas would benefit from more traffic.

They found some boulders. whoopee. Let me know if they find something taller than 12', and then we'll round up the posse and hunt it down.

I have not found many climbing areas or locations in general that benefit from more human traffic. More cleaning, trundling, and brushing perhaps, just not more people.

Friendly Texas hayseeds are welcome anytime. Don't forget to enjoy our chile.

I think the secret area is actually an older area called Big Block aka Bad Rock. It is quite close to Albuquerque and offers some really world class climbing. The problems are all 12 and a half feet tall. Round up the posse.
