I'm wondering about the wall I've designated with a big-ass arrow and ?. I keep looking at it and thinking to myself that somebody must have been on it, since it's: tall, appears to be dead vertical, and has been in plain sight of so many people (climbers) for so long. That, and pretty much every other climbable piece of rock around here has seen an ascent or two. I looked through the Backcountry Rockclimbing book and I don't think it has any info about this wall. Also, is there a trail that comes somewhat close to this wall? Sorry about the lack of detail, this is just a poo-poo cell phone pic.
EDIT: clarification- it's the long, east-facing wall in the shade, very close to the manzanita bush the arrow is really pointing to.

| I think its "sugerloaf". Peter Noebels did a route there that fell off!
death wall (up finger rock canyon) has 4-5 Des Champs beak-fest routes put up in the early to mid 1990's

| Several folks I know of (myself included) have wandered around the base, looking for something to start up on. I know Brian B. was scoping out some lines, but don't think he's done anything yet--I'll ask him. KR had thought about a few route possibilities, but again, don't think anything was done by him. You can approach on a trail from the Pontatoc Cyn. side but you can stay on a good trail longer if you take Finger Rock trail then choose the right spot on the steep part above the spring to hop over the ridge. I helped Brian B. with two of several unpublished climbs that he has done high on the Finger Rock side of that ridge. Watch out for loose rock! (see RickD comment.) | |

| Thanks for the info! I emailed Peter Noebels and he told me that he's never done anything on that particular face. He mentioned something about Dave DeChamps (sp?) possibly climbing some routes, though.
If you've been there: Does this rock look good or is it a choss pile? Any lines that could go free (at a reasonable grade) or does it look like predominantly aid?

| My memory is that it's very steep and there aren't a lot of weaknesses to work with. Brian has not done anything on it and says the main line he looked at would be aid and had 30 feet of blank face at the start.
That said, sounds like you're interested enough that you should be hiking out there yourself and checking it out! Lots of great routes have been overlooked over the years due to various assumptions. Drop me a line if you ever have a weekday and want to go explore out there.
