Hoping to learn how much snow in the Sandias.. hoping to get there this weekend.
I realize the Crest is really snowy... and any top-down approaches probably need snowshoes.

Can I get to Yataghan or Pulpit from the foothills with no snowshoes?
Are La Cueva Canyon, Lower slabs dry?

Thanks in advance.

Approach to Highway to Hell

I have not been up there in a while but looking up at them I can see snow on lots of the features of the rock. Although with the temps that we are having you will probably be ok. Sorry I don't have better info. I was thinking of doing some climbing up there this weekend as well. Probably sunday.

You should be fine with just approach shoes if you hike up to Yataghan/Pulpit from the foothills. LLC slabs will be wet in places and kind of cold.

Aaaaahhhh!!! Only one #4 and no #5!? But look at that thing! N. Chimney Route, Castleton Tower.

Made it up there yesterday with George Perkins, et al, and yes, I know he was the OP, but I figured others may benefit from knowing. La Luz was clear for all but the north-facing portions of the trail. Goings were slippery in the morning but had thawed to a comfortable slush by the late afternoon. Climbed The Cave Route on The Pulpit; the route itself, with the exception of the base of the climb, was clear and dry (nice time of year to climb, actually). The descent off the backside was another story: slippery and cold with about 5 feet of snow in the gully. It caused delays because of the extra precautions that were necessary to keep from slipping down. Other than that, it was fine.
