Description 

Quartzite climbing on trad, mixed, and sport lines. Cliimbing here is an adventure. For the icebox and surrounding areas there is only a 5 minute approach from the car to the rap in. Great location, beautiful canyon. Climbing seasons spring, summer, and fall.

Starting the long and exposed traverse to install the top anchors on annihilation.

Annihilation 5.10c PG13  AZ : Sierra Ancha Mountains : Icebox
first pitch past some scary looking (but better than it looks) rock to fixed nut and toward bolt then into a short sweet crack. Past crack is easy but loose climbing to gain a narrow, flat ledge at two ring anchors. The second pitch is the money, start thin and clip bolt then pull committing crux, a small bulge/roof. Getting to the roof on thin balancy holds is actually the crux, the top of the little roof is flat and you can pull/mantle over it ...[more]

A handful of ancient Salado ruins exist in the Sierra Ancha.  Here I sit in the doorway to an airy rock "porch" off a multi-story cliff dwelling.  Inside, 700 year old wooden beams still cross the roof in some places and a few other artifacts remain unpilfered.  <br /><br />The hike is strenuous and the route finding somewhat difficult to access this remote gem.  The Salado people weren't kidding around when they decided to build this thing.  <br /><br />May 2008
