BETA PHOTO: Crossing the stream at the fixed line.

Description

The Anvil Rock area hosts the best concentration of good bouldering in Sedona as well as a handful of sport routes.

Getting There

The Anvil Rock area is located at the north end of Sedona off Highway 89A. Park at the first pullout on the west side of the highway after leaving town. From here, cross the road, jump the barrier and scramble down the steep slope below. Cross Oak Creek at the lowest looking spot then walk east for about three minutes to the boulders. The Anvil Rock sport climbs are located on the cliff band 3 minutes uphill from the boulders.

There's a PDF guide to this area floating around the net that recommends parking on schnebly hill rd and hiking 25 minutes to the anvil boulders. Not the best way, I'd say. Got lost a few times, did a ton a bushwhacking- and now I know better. Otherwise, I like this area. Too bad it's not a little more pristine, considering all the wilderness in the area.

PDF is no longer available on the website but if you stop in and ask at VR they could probably get you a copy. The directions on the topo are worthwhile since they allow you to access the boulders easily during high water, but the 89A approach is way faster the rest of the time.
