Description

A bit close to a tree at times. Some choose to use the tree rather than hanging on a bolt. You might have to take off a number grade or two if you do this, but it is still climbing. If you don't think about it being there you will hardly notice it and probably will not use the tree. Rumor has that The Viking did.

Location

On the right end of the Wall of Marching Munchkins just right of Because Because Because. Starts from the top of the taller of two tombstone like rocks at the base of the cliff.

Protection

Fun new route, Eric. I climbed it today with it's namesake, Wing. I tried it sans tree but missed the nice no-hands rest. Another nice moderate here for those of us still aspiring to be 5.11 climbers!

As long as you are not using crampons and dry tooling the tree it should be okay. You are not supposed to be touching it anyway unless the forest service has issued you a permit. Form TU-666 is the application. Fill it out and return it to the FS and in six weeks you will know if you can touch that tree. Most apps are denied so you should not be touching that or any other tree.

I thought this was a pretty fun route, but I too would hate to see anyone chop this tree down because of it. Its one of the biggest ones near the crag! Please save the tree!!

Joseph, who realistically do you think would cut this tree down? It's hard to get people to do a little trail maintenance once in a while. At best this is a one star route and the tree is part of what makes it a little different. The tree will die long before the route erodes away. No one I know cuts down trees in Arizona unless they are dead and pose a danger to a leader that falls off. Who said anything about cutting down this tree anyway?

Someone told me a few weeks ago that this route is a three star stemming problem and a little easier. It's all climbing and it is all good. Enjoy it whichever way you please.
