Green Slabs is a great destination if you are looking for moderate trad. There are only a couple of sport routes, and though they are worth doing, this area is usually less crowded than most. If you really want a clip-up, try Yurt Monkey (5.8). Otherwise, there are no lack of good gear leads on this crag. Many routes, yes even the trad routes, have chain anchors at the top, but don't assume!
Lots of trees means the base stays shady, but the higher rock on this south facing crag can heat up in the afternoon. Green Slab's orientation and relatively low elevation make it a good cool weather crag.
Getting There
Driving up the Catalina Highway, Green Slabs will be visible on the right near mp 10.2. The highway passes tightly between two large rock formations here. The formation on the right is the western end of Green Slabs. Park at one of the nearby pullouts and find a trail heading steeply uphill to the crag. The trail is well defined and approaches the crag from the southwest.
The parking area for Green Slabs is not at the 10.2 mile point (as 'Squeezing the Lemmon' describes). In fact, you actually want to park right BEFORE the 10 mile marker in a large pull-out where the road crosses through two rock formations. The trail can easily be spotted from the pull-out and in five minutes the trail will lead you directly to the base of Monkey Business (5.7). Cool crag.
The back side of Green Slabs is being called Green Acres. The only green thing back there is the leaves of trees. The wall is dominated by a neat looking yellow dihedral above a big ledge.
