The Cork. N.Rim. GCNP.

Description

Approach involves 70 foot Coconino sandstone pourover.

Location

Mount Trumball Road then South FR1058 or 1057 a couple miles short of the road's end at SB Point. N.Rim. GCNP. Drop off the rim left (east) and negotiate west across a narrow ledge traverse (cl.3) and downclimb to reach the saddle between the rim and distinct rim island. Descend the bouldery western slope, then out of the gully south down some talus and into a steeply sloping Coconino bay. Crux and steep talus southeast across Esplanade to easy black volcanic summit.

Protection

Use one double or two single lines with a small rack, a few cracks, a small tree, a threaded sling in a mini window rock, and/or additional hardware to securely anchor a rappel line. Rappel less than ½ rope length down to the talus slopes below. Inexperience climbers be prepared with ascending equipment (jumars) for the return back out. The sandstone rockfall has multiple solid cracks and can be free climbed w/ or wo/ a soloist.
